This Holi Spread the Colour of Love and Care

Holi is a great festival of Hindus and is celebrated by playing colours in many regions of the country. People celebrate this colourful festival with their friends and family members by spraying coloured water through pichkaris, eat sweets, visit temples and give blessing to the young ones. Holika Dahan or bonfire is an important event on this day. But the toxins and harsh chemicals of colours and smoke released from bonfires are responsible for causing several health issues like allergies to unknown allergens, bronchitis, cough, nasal irritation, allergies related to respiratory tract illness that trigger the onset of asthmatic attack. These colours are responsible for causing serious damage to the overall health which can be temporary or permanent. Synthetic colours are full of toxic heavy metals like mercury sulphide (red colour), lead oxide (black colour), aluminium bromide (silver colour), copper sulphate (green colour). Due to the contact with the harsh chemicals present in the toxic colours destroyed the texture of hair by making them dry, brittle and rough. Further, these colours also cause scalp irritation, dermatitis, eczema and many more. On this day people used to take bhang or cannabis in eatables and drinks, but this should not be taken in excess because it can cause neurological and psychiatric type of disorders. It increased the blood pressure and heart rate, including several neurological problems. To avoid these health related problems we should celebrate safe Holi.

colour testing

Points for Celebrating Safe Holi:

  1. Play Holi only in your friend circle and also do care of your friends.
  2. Don’t wear contact lenses while playing Holi.
  3. Only use natural or herbal colours rather than chemical colours.  We cannot say that these colours are safe, but on comparing with the chemical ones these are much safer. These days’ herbal or natural colours are easily available in the market e.g. Turmeric, Heena, arrowroot, kumkum, beetroot, hibiscus flowers, marigold flowers, tea leaves, etc. is used for making natural colours.
  4. Hair oil like coconut, olive, amla and castor should be applied on the scalp before playing Holi and can be immediately washed. This will protect the hair from being damaged.
  5. Before playing Holi applies oils such as sesame, coconut, olive, almond, castor or mustard on all over the body as these oils act as repellents.
  6. Apply lip balm or petroleum jelly for the protection of lips.
  7. For protecting the nails from toxic colours, apply nail paints that must be removed just after playing Holi.
  8. Use a mask during Holika Dahan.
  9. Don’t consume bhang on an empty stomach.
  10. Don’t play with balloons to avoid injuries.

Mysterious Death – Caused by Litchi Fruit in Bihar

In India, Bihar is the largest producer of Litchi fruit. It is a popular juicy and flavourful fruit during the summer season, but has complex nature. A number of school going children died after eating Litchis in Bihar. Health experts found that Litchi seed consists of certain kinds of amino acids, which negatively affects the blood glucose levels in the body. According to a study the toxic amino acids are generally present in immature fruit that becomes fatal with an outbreak of acute encephalopathy causes convulsions and coma in the Muzaffarpur region in Bihar linked with the toxicity of hypoglycin A and MCPG. This disease mostly affected poor and malnourished children. In order to reduce the illness as well as casualties in the area, experts suggested the minimum consumption of litchi and it is further advised to take the proper meal, particularly the dinner so, that the fruit does not affect the glucose level. This happened because children used to consume litchi fruit all over the day from the nearby orchards and most of them skipped their dinner. The study revealed that after consumption of litchi fruit two-third of the sick children found toxic amino acids in their urine samples. These toxic substances impaired with the synthesis of glucose in the body which is associated with dangerously low blood glucose level and unconscious in the middle of the night or in the early morning. In this situation, effected children, then, immediately rushed to the hospital, they should be treated immediately for correcting their blood glucose level, muscle weakness, nervous system disorder.

Identify The Real Gold Jewelry at your Door Step

By performing some simple experiments at home one can easily identify the fake and real gold jewelry like checking for stamp markings, attraction towards the magnet, density test, nitric acid test. Further, scratching of gold jewelry against the ceramic surface is another method for testing real jewelry.

Jewelry Testing Labs

Marking Test Most of the gold jewelers mark their stamps (by denoting the karatage of gold) on the gold jewelry designed by them.

Magnetic Test It is another method for identification of gold purity. If the jewelry sticks to the magnet, then the jewelry is not real because real gold has no magnetic attraction and does not stick to the magnet.

Density Test This test can be performed by placing the jewelry in a beaker of water, if it sinks, then, the jewelry is of real gold because gold has greater density than any other metal.

Acid Test For, performing this test, nitric acid is used. By putting some drops of nitric acid on the gold jewelry shows no reaction as, gold is a non reactive metal whereas, fake jewelry changes its colour.

Scratch Test On scratching the real gold jewelry against a ceramic plate or tiles leaves a golden streak, however, dark or black coloured streak observed in case of fake jewelry. Discoloration occurs in the false jewelry on wearing this.

The most accurate tests for testing the purity of gold are performed by using fluorescence spectrometers (XRF). Such type of instruments sends X-rays through the tested sample. The atoms of the tested material become excited and move into a higher energy state and release energy in the form of radiation while returning into their ground state. XRF detects as well as read the radiation. By observing the radiation, we can easily find out the material by which the jewelry is made of.

We can also clean the gold jewelry at home by adopting simple and small process of cleaning with the household articles like dish detergent, water and tooth brush. Take small amount of dishwashing detergent or soap into a bowl containing water; soak the gold jewelry into the solution for at least 15 minutes. Now, take out the jewelry from the soap solution and gently clean the surface of jewelry with the help of a soft bristled tooth brush. Finally, rinsing is done with warm water and then, dries it with a muslin cloth. The gold jewelry leads to shinier as well as brighter.

Are you Experiencing Cactus Like Feeling with Woollens?

Wool is derived from sheep and contains lanolin, a kind of natural oil, which is responsible for causing allergies to several people.  The most common wool allergy symptoms in the people include irritation, itching, rashes, and hives on the skin. It affects the eyes and leads to puffiness, itching as well as redness. It also causes nasal problems like running nose, sneezing, nausea, congestion and other problems related to respiratory tract. However, the people who are allergic to lanolin of wool also show the similar allergic reactions when exposed to the other products which contain lanolin such as wool wax, cosmetics and other personal products. However, only wool alone cannot be the actual cause of allergic reactions such as lumps and red bumps all over the skin, but due to the direct contact of wool with the skin generally causes itching and irritation because of the nature of the woollen garments.

woollens product testing labs

In the process of manufacturing of woollen garments like sweaters, scarves, socks, jackets and gloves synthetic chemicals and colours are required. Both the chemicals and colours can be the reason for different allergic reactions to the people who are not familiar about the allergic reactions caused by synthetic chemicals and dyes used in the making process of woollens but do complain about wool allergies. These only trigger or accelerate the allergic reactions.

A person who is allergic to wool has the same kind of allergic response just like in the persons having an allergy due to pollens, dust and pets such as rashes on the body including face, arms, hands, feet, etc. This may appear immediately or may occur in a couple of days just after coming in the direct contact of wool.

Till date, there is no particular treatment for the allergic reactions of wool; however, some antihistamines and allergy shots can also be given to the patients at the onset of allergic symptoms. Further, persons should stop using those products which consist of wool if possible.  So, to avoid such kind of allergy one should put cotton clothing in between the skin and the woollen garments and really it is enough to solve the itching problem.

Shocking Truth of Refined Oils

Refined oil is the processed form of natural oil, which can be obtained after treating the natural oils with different chemicals to meet the consumer’s expectations like free from specific colour, odour and flavour, has long shelf life as well as good for frying purposes, but is not good for the digestive as well as respiratory health of the human body. It is also responsible for causing various diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart and kidney problems, and many more.

blog-31-jan-2017 copy

Let’s have a look at the harmful effects of refined oils.

  1. Chemical exposure: Nickel is used for processing of natural oil, but it has carcinogenic and negative effects on the respiratory system, liver, skin of the human body.
  2. Sodium hydroxide: A harmful chemical added during the refining process and affects the digestive system of the body.
  3. Preservatives: During the refining process, preservatives are added, but preservatives are also not good for human health.
  4. Bleaching agents:  Bleaching, dewaxing, deodorizing, degumming and deacidification are the harmful steps included in the process of refining process. These steps reduce the chlorophyll content, taste and other nutrients of the oil which ultimately increase the oxidation and rancidity in the edible oil. However, bleaching increases the shelf-life of the edible oil in deep fat frying applications.
  5. High Temperature: Refining involves the exposure of natural oil to the high temperature that removes all the natural and beneficial substances from the oil.

blog-31-jan-2017

Chemicals used in the refining of oils cause several ailments like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and renal problems, different allergies, premature ageing, ulcers, emphysema, infertility, hypoglycemia and arthritis. Therefore, doctors and nutritionists advised to go for natural, unrefined and cold pressed vegetable oil because refined oil is unfit for consumption. Cold pressed oils are also known as unrefined oils, such oils are mechanically extracted by a machine by applying pressure not the high temperature or in other words such types of oils are extracted in a much healthier way. In this process, the seeds are not subjected to high temperature and harsh chemicals which are carcinogenic in nature that’s why cold pressed oils are full of high flavor and nutritional composition and thus making them a healthier choice for buyers. In cold pressed oil, less than 40-degree temperature should be maintained by which the oils does not lose vitamin and essential fatty acids and maintains its natural characteristics. Once the extracted oil settles, it is filtered and packed into the bottles.
Cold pressed or unrefined oils are much healthier option than the refined oils because unrefined oils like mustard oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and olive oil, etc. are generally used in weight loss, it also aids in several above mentioned health issues.

Aluminium Utensils Results in the Degeneration of Brain

Maximum people are using aluminium kitchen ware for cooking and processing of food in the form of frying pans, sauce pans, pressure cookers, teapots, spoons, etc. because of easy availability at affordable prices and good conductor of heat. However, on the regular consumption of food prepared in aluminium cookware causes aluminium poisoning, but people are unaware of the harmful effects of the cheap aluminium cookware sets. These types of utensils are slow poison in the human body, these utensils change the colour and the taste of the food prepared in it by making it contaminated.  Aluminium is highly reactive to the foods which are strongly acidic and alkali in nature, such as tomatoes, spinach etc., but, aluminium leaches faster in acidic foods than that of basic foods. Food prepared in the aluminium utensils can easily absorb aluminium from the utensils as aluminium gets easily dissolved into the food and water during cooking, which readily enters into the bloodstream and deposited in the different organs and part of the human body like muscles, kidneys, liver and bones. The excretory system in our body is not able to extract the accumulated metal in the muscles, kidneys, liver and skeletal system and in the present scenario there is no effective treatment for aluminium poisoning. Therefore, it is unwise to prepare food, tea and coffee in the aluminium kitchen ware. Other possible sources of aluminium poisoning are packaged foods (soups, baked beans, tuna, prawns, sardines, chips, snacks, fresh-cut fruits and vegetables) drinks and beverages such as soft and alcoholic drinks packed in aluminium cans. Further, baby foods and infant formula also contain traces of aluminium significantly.

BLOG-27-JAN-2017

Aluminium utensils generally show pitting when aluminium has leached away this proves that aluminium does dissolve in the food and water. The symptoms of aluminium poisoning are hyperacidity, indigestion, flatulence, skin pigmentation, allergy, eczema, dandruff,  loss of memory, depression, anxiety, asthma, appendicitis, renal failure, and problem in eye, diarrhoea, ulcers in the mouth and stomach, abdominal cramps and pain. Its continuous exposure lead to osteoporosis and Alzheimer disease in which patient is not able to collect recent events, but clearly recollects the events that happened in the past. The poisoning of this metal can only be reduced by drinking freshly prepared juice of orange, pineapple and sweet lime, etc. and by replacing the aluminium cookware with the stainless steel or cast iron utensils.

Don’t Get Attracted Towards the Hazardous Mosquito Repellents

Mosquitoes are the uninvited guests that transmit various diseases like dengue, malaria, chikungunya, yellow fever, etc. These mosquitoes borne diseases transmitted, can be reduced by using several mosquito killers and these are easily available in the market at affordable prices in the form of coils, mats, liquid vaporizers, sprays, repellents, and so, on. All these repellents decrease the chances of being bitten and thus, reduce the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases. Here, is the fact that if these products repel or kill the mosquitoes, then is also responsible for the negative effects on human health. Therefore, in order to prevent the human health these harmful chemical products should not be publicized. All the mosquito repellent products contain N, N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) a hazardous chemical, which causes allergic reactions to peoples and is also responsible for causing various types of allergies along with several illnesses like asthma, headaches, congestion, sore throat, nausea, dizziness, runny nose, encephalitis and respiratory disorders and its prolonged exposure is also responsible for causing lung cancer. That is why these products should be used with great care. From the literature survey, it can be revealed that in growing children it causes skin rashes, eye irritation, nervous system disorders and anaphylactic shock. Poor and illiterate people in the society are unaware of the hazardous effects of mosquito repellents on the human body. Therefore, it is mandatory to educate the people regarding the usage along with the negative effects by organizing workshops, conferences, seminars, publications, advertisements.

Keep the important points in mind while using mosquito repellents-

  1. Manufacturer’s instructions should always be followed.
  2. Don’t use coils, sprays inside the rooms or near the family members, but always use outside the doors and windows to keep the mosquitoes away.
  3. Avoid sleeping in a room with burning coil, plugging repellent, sprays etc.
  4. Keep all these products away from the reach of the children.
  5. Burning coils should be placed away from the furniture, curtains, flammable articles, books, papers etc.

Be Attentive while Choosing the Correct Dishwashing Bar

Today various kinds of dish washing soaps are available in the market with lots of claims like eco-friendly, better cleaning, antimicrobial and antibacterial property. Dishwashing bars or cakes are found in each and every house for cleaning of dishes. Detergents in these cakes combined with the enzymes help with the dishes and utensils wash easily. By using this one can get rid of stained and uncleaned dishes. Many chemicals listed on the dish bar by the chemical names and unfortunately, common person doesn’t familiar about the bad effects of chemicals. These toxic chemicals are absorbed by the skin that directly enter into the blood stream which then are responsible for causing asthma, neurological disorders, skin irritation, cancer, etc. Some of the common and basic chemical ingredients in the dish bar contained surfactants, preservatives, fragrance, colour with active and inactive chemical ingredients.

blog-19-jan-2017 jpg

  1. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS): It is a detergent based chemical which acts as a surfactant used as a cleanser. It is associated with the carcinogenic chemical Nitrosamines and responsible for absorption of toxic nitrates into the body.
  2. Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES): It is linked with the suspected carcinogen Dioxane which remains in the body for longer time and effects the functioning of the liver.
  3. Propylene Glycol: It is a chemical which is used as an anti-freeze for car radiator. It is found in dish bar, moisturizers, cosmetics, hand sanitizers, baby products, conditioners and shampoos. It negatively effects the functioning of liver and kidneys.
  4. Methylisothiazolinone: It acts as a preservative which is a neurotoxic and associated with allergic reactions and irritation.
  5. Fragrance: Scented products contain several harmful chemical ingredients including phthalates, which are responsible for different kinds of allergies and impairment of hormones. Phthalates are found in cosmetics, food packaging, plastic container, plastic tubes, and jar lids.
  6. Triclosan: It is a synthetic chemical used as an antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal chemical and generally found in toothpaste, soaps, cosmetics, perfumes, clothing, dish bar, kitchen ware, coolers and paints. It disrupts the hormonal system of the body, including endocrine and thyroid system which weakens the immune system.
  7. Coal Tar Dyes: Coloured cleaning products contaminated with heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium and lead. These harmful coloured dyes can be readily absorbed by the skin and causes several health problems, including hormonal imbalance, cancer and allergies.

Microwaved Food is NOT Good –Don’t expose yourself

Microwaves are the high-frequency radio waves mainly used for broadcasting TV, radar for air, sea navigational aids, signals for telecommunications, processing of medicines and cooking food. Like light waves, microwaves are reflected and readily absorbed by the materials that contain moisture, such as foods and liquids, water molecules are bipolar in nature i.e. having positive as well as negative end. In Microwave oven, microwaves are produced in a magnetron, which is a tube that creating an electromagnetic field with 2450 MHz frequency and causes dielectric heating. In the presence of an electric field water molecules rotate rapidly like millions of times per second, creates molecular friction which is responsible for heating up the food. According to manufacturer’s guidelines, microwave ovens are convenient to use and considered safe for heating and cooking foods, but some precautions to be taken while using in order to reduce exposure of high-frequency radio waves. Microwave oven is a cabinet that contained microwave when this cabinet is switched on and the door is closed. As recommended by the international standards this cabinet should be in good condition and leak proof to the microwaves. Microwave users should follow the instructions given, like the door shuts properly, proper functioning of safety device. Its function is to check the leakage of microwaves from being produced when the door is open. If there is any damage to the outer case of the oven, it should not be used further until it has been repaired by a professional service engineer.

Microwaved food is NOT Good

Low blood pressure, slow pulse rate, stress, anxiety, high blood pressure, heart disease, headache, dizziness, eye pain, cataract, hair loss, sleeplessness, weakened immune system, and infertility are the main symptoms of Microwave sickness.

  1. Reheating the food in the microwave can destroy the essential nutrients and converts the plate of food into the “dead food” because of dielectric heating of microwaves.  The rotation of water molecules present in food creates molecular friction and start heating the food due to high frequencies in the microwave.
  2. Microwaving also changes the nutritional composition of the food, even at low-temperature heating. Different foods like raw beef, pork and milk lost 30-40% vitamin B-12 during microwave heating.
  3. Carcinogenic substances such as BPA, benzene, toluene and xylene are produced, when the heated foods are wrapped in the plastic materials that are being absorbed by the human body while consuming food.
  4. On consuming microwaved milk and recipes, blood changes its composition like, reduction in red blood cells (RBC), increase in white blood cells and total cholesterol level, which affects the functioning of the heart, experiencing chest pain due to irregular heart beat.
  5. Microwave cooking reduces the bio-availability of vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin E, and other essential nutrients. It also degraded the quality of meat, vegetables as well as frozen fruits and responsible for the production of carcinogenic chemicals thereby reduces the nutritional content.
  6. Packaging material of microwavable foods like pizzas, chips and popcorn has also released several carcinogenic toxic chemicals into the food. These toxic chemicals included polyethylene terpthalate (PET), dioxin, BPA etc.

Spectro Analytical Labs have fully accredited facilities for detection carcinogenic toxic chemicals in air, water, and food products. It also provides training and assistance in this regard.

Radon –A radioactive indoor pollutant causes Lung cancer

Radon is a noble and radioactive gas produced naturally by decaying of radium present in the ores of uranium and rocks. As it is an inert gas, it does not produce any hazardous effects, but on radioactive disintegration alpha, beta and gamma particles are produced. Gamma particles are dangerous and can travel through the human body. It is an odourless, tasteless, highly toxic, invisible gas which is fairly soluble in water and organic solvents, seeps into the ground and from the ground it spread into the surrounding atmosphere. The Radon gas when released through the ground, diffuses into the atmosphere in the diluted form therefore, causes no harm. But in homes, it is found in more concentrated form and can be highly toxic to the health of the family members as, most of the houses and apartments have been constructed over the top of the radon producing rocks. On breaking down on radon gas it is converted into radioactive substances and releases energy which on absorbed by tissues, can destroy the DNA and thus elevated the risk of cellular damage and lung cancer. There is not a safe level for radon gas so, it’s long term effects on indoor air and increases the chances of cancer. By switching to healthy diet one can reduce the risks of several health related problems caused by the exposure of radon gas. Examples of such foods are- Broccoli, cabbage, green leafy vegetables, beet-root, kale, Brussels sprouts, green tea, dry fruits, seafoods, fruits, vitamin C and supplements of zinc and selenium. Now the question is how this toxic gas enters into the houses and changed the quality of indoor air? The air pressure in the soil is higher than that of indoor air pressure and this difference in concentration of air pressure is the easiest way for radon gas to enter into the house if there is any crack in the floor, walls, window casements, construction joints, gaps around the pipes, floor drains. The difference in air pressure varies from a house to house, the level can be analyzed by go through radon test because testing is the only best way to analyze the radon level in the indoor air, as there are no such signs to give an indication about the exposure. There are two methods for analyzing the percentage of a radon are- a radon test kit method, and by hiring a certified professional from a testing lab for conducting a radon test for at least 3 months. Radon gas testing was conducted in different industrial polluted cities of Haryana like Faridabad, Rewari, Gurugram (Gurgaon), Yamuna Nagar, Ambala, Panipat and Jagadhari. It was done because of the climatic conditions; it is very hot during summers and markedly cold in the winter season. The radon concentration is lower during rainy season and greater in winter than in summer because the ventilation and the exchange of air become very poor in winters. Limestone, slate stone, dolomite, building stone, china clay and marble are found in Haryana and at some places graphite and quartzite are also found. Further, Mountain and Shivalik hills are present in the north and southwest Haryana respectively, which can be a great source of radon gas.

indoor pollutant

If a high percentage of radon is evaluated in indoor air then these precautions should be taken

  1. A regular maintenance of the house is required by sealing all the cracks and holes in the walls, floors, around pipes and drains to avoid the health issues.
  2. Proper ventilation is important because the exchange of internal air is beneficial in reducing the radon level.
  3. By installing a pump that is used to withdraw radon gas from the from below the concrete flooring before it can admitted into the house.
